Step 2: Study of Various Strategies for Change
Throughout history, citizens have effected change around the world through direct action, formal systems and community dialogue. Within these broad catagories, many strategies have been utilized.

To explore some of these nonviolent strategies for change with your students, divide the class into 11 small groups and assign each group one Voices for Peace Strategy to study in detail. The strategies featured in the handouts to follow include promoting change through:
  • Arts
  • Boycotts
  • Civil Disobedience
  • Cross-Community Work
  • Courts
  • Education
  • Elections
  • Information Campaigns
  • Legislation
  • Street Demonstrations
  • Strikes
Provide each group with the appropriate quotations and video clips, and ask them to complete the questions in the Listening Guide. Ask each group to present about its strategy to the class.
